So I know I never share much of anything with you guys but this is something that has become extremely important to me. Mike and I have been volunteering at a dog (and the very few cat) shelter and I feel the need to tell you how much it has changed me. I had always wanted to do it but never really knew how to go about it, until a few weeks ago that we went to a fundraiser for an animal shelter and got to meet these 3 girls that ran another little shelter with almost no help, and some of the dogs they take care of so I got their numbers to keep in touch with them and see if we could help them in any way besides just donations.
The week after that we went to their shelter and helped out. It was really hard work, but I didn’t care not one bit cause I was so happy and excited to be there. Like wow I get to hang out with all these amazing dogs for a whole day??! And it was so shocking to me after hearing some of their stories, that they were still so incredibly friendly and full of love. Some of them had been burned on purpose by horrible people, tortured, kicked, ran over and left to die, just heartbreaking stories and yet they had no hard feelings towards people. Everytime I walk in there they all come to me begging for rubs. I admit it can be heartbreaking to see some of these dogs in the shape they’re in, but it doesn’t compare to the happiness I feel when I’m there with them. The only downside is that I think my dog Sammy is a little jealous hehe.
There’s this one buddy at the shelter in particular, his name is Poncho; his jaw hangs cause it was shattered, his tail burned and his back legs broken. Can barely walk, drools all the time and has a hairless sensitive tail, but he’s become my buddy there, I could rub him for hours and hours and he’s got these eyes that scream ‘please I only need someone to love me’ he’s the one on the upper right corner on the picture. Anyways, after all he went through he’s still hopeful and wanting to make somebody really happy. Going to this shelter has truly changed me and I realize that I want help homeless animals for the rest of my life.
I encourage you to go to a shelter and volunteer at least once, or at least donate food or whatever you can! These guys have no one but the few that are willing to dedicate their lives to help them, so no matter where you live, help them in whatever way you can, animals have the purest souls and they will live their lives only to love you.
And a little reminder, neuter your pets, and never buy from breeders, always go to a shelter and adopt a homeless buddy, you won’t regret it! Those guys are the sweetest things, specially the older ones!
